as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we
all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away

Not by works of
righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by
the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost [Titus 3:5]

2. I have lived a good life and done good

(A saving belief is not just a head
knowledge; rather it is receiving Christ as Savior -- a total commitment of
oneself to Him for salvation -- trusting in nothing else.)
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of
God, even to them that believe on his name [John 1:12] (God's gift
of salvation must be accepted.)
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift
of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord [Romans 6:23]
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth
the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him
from the dead, thou shalt be saved [Romans 10:9]

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name
under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved [Acts 4:12].
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he
shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture [John 10:9].
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the
truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me [John 14:6]

And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this
life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the
Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you

eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God

But God commendeth his love toward us, in
that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us [Romans 5:8]
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who
knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him [II
Corinthians 5:21]
(God does not send anyone to hell; a
sinner who does not believe in Jesus' sacrifice for sin sends himself to
hell)
For God sent not his Son into the world to
condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He
that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is
condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God [John 3:17-18]
He that believeth on the Son hath
everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but
the wrath of God abideth on him [John 3:36]
